WOODEN TOYS

Lekemu Seleman is 31 years old and lives in a rural village outside Lilongwe in Malawi. He was taught how to make toys by his brother. The road near to where he lives was under construction and he observered the machines used and started to replicate them. Each of the models can take up to a week to produce. The toys are made completely by hand using rudimentary tools on the floor outside his home.

SHWE SHWE POPPI'S

These dolls are living stories from Zola creche in Soweto, South Africa. Zola creche is run by the African Feeding Scheme, an NGO that distributes food on a daily basis to more than 20,000 children in Soweto. Based on the children's drawings from the crèche, each Poppi is hand made and comes in its own Shwe Shwe bag, together with a picture of the child who drew the design.

Funds generated are placed into a trust for ongoing education.

FORWARD BEARS PROJECT

The Bear Project is a small community upliftment programme, based in Cape Town, South Africa. Originally the project employed fifteen women who were all HIV/AIDS positive. Over the years, the group has changed – and now comprises a good mix of both women and men. The bears are made with the finest French thread and high-quality black cotton. Detailed hand-embroidery is a labour intensive process. It takes two days to make a small bear.
